Mojarto presents a short video of Chifumi’s work titled “Kirtimukha” for Varanasi Arts Project.
Best known from Hindu temple iconography the Kirtimukha, or this fierce monster face with huge fangs & a gaping mouth, straddles the door to two different worlds – this world and the netherworld. What the Kirtimukha is doing here is demonstrating his power of soul-smuggling. From blue to red & from left to right, we witness these incredible transformations through his head. Painted as a strong symbol on the banks of the River Ganga, this work is inspired by the incredible energy that emerges in Varanasi. At once full of life but also evocative of the past.
Born and raised in Eastern France, Chifumi currently lives in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. His work is characterized by big painting of hands dancing on walls; he uses the body gesture to express different meaning through the cities where he travels.
